Recently, the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) – the world’s premier academic event in the global field of breast oncology —was held in the United States. Boasting a history of over 40 years and attracting top experts from more than 90 countries, SABCS has long served as a key benchmark for measuring research strength in breast oncology. A research paper submitted by the team led by Chief Physician Jia Hongyan from the Department of Breast Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of Our University, was selected for poster presentation at the symposium following rigorous review. This marks the first time the department has achieved poster display at a major international academic conference since its establishment, signifying a new milestone in the department’s research capabilities.

Led by Attending Physician Zhang Aoxue, the research team, including members Wang Canzhou and Wang Xinxu, traveled to the U.S. to present the poster in person. Focusing on the intrinsic link between breast malignant tumors and mental illnesses, the study put forward research conclusions with clinical translational value through rigorous data analysis and the application of innovative technologies. In a visually engaging format, the poster systematically elaborated on the research background, core data, and application prospects to global experts and scholars in breast oncology, sparking widespread attention and lively discussions. Many international peers stopped to exchange ideas, offering high praise for the study’s scientific rigor and innovation, which laid a solid foundation for future international cooperation.
This achievement stems from the department and Professor Jia Hongyan’s team’s long-term adherence to the philosophy of “integrated development of clinical practice and scientific research”. The team refines research directions from clinical problems, polishes research ideas through solid data accumulation, and improves the study through multiple rounds of demonstration and revision. Ultimately, this breakthrough on the international academic stage not only fully affirms the team’s research strength but also builds a high-level international exchange platform for young physicians in the department.
During the symposium, team members gained an immersive understanding of cutting-edge trends in global breast oncology and learned about the latest advances in research fields such as precision treatment of breast cancer and clinical pharmaceuticals. These advanced international concepts and technical experiences will be gradually translated and applied to clinical diagnosis, treatment, and research innovation of breast cancer at The First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, helping to elevate the level of regional breast health services.
Taking this SABCS participation as an opportunity, the Department of Breast Surgery will continue to deepen its commitment to clinical research, encourage young physicians to actively engage in innovative practices, strengthen academic exchanges and cooperation at home and abroad, and strive to produce more high-quality research outcomes. It aims to continuously make its voice heard loudly on the international stage of breast oncology as a strong representative of Shanxi Medical University.
